 | | Photography | | 2006 - 2007 | | 50x75cm each | The project “Been There, Done That” investigates the visual conventions and semantic ambiguity of tourist snaps, but also their function in the process of creation of identity and personal history, as the purpose of travelling today seems to be summed in the act of taking a photo of the sites we have previously seen on television, in the Internet or in travel books. These snapshots become not only surrogates of our memories related to the stay abroad, but also the means by which we construct our “touristic” experience.
By assuming the ready-made identity of a cultural tourist who is always only photographed on places recommended by well established tourist guides, at the same time avoiding to capture everyday routines and mundane aspects of my presence on various locations, I construct a fictionalised narrative of my experiences. Yet, by subverting the conventions of well composed tourist images – centrally positioned, smiling subject in the focus - I also question the plausibility of such a narrative which only consists of festive moments, presenting life as series of postcards from an on-going holiday, unravelling against the changing backdrop of recognisable cultural monuments.
